Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Banners In Adams

The Adams Community Development Department has developed new downtown banners to commemorate Susan B. Anthony and her association with Adams. They will be installed along Park Street in early October. The project is part of the Town’s ongoing Downtown Banner Program to promote Adams. Installation of the new banners, which were produced by Callahan Signs, is intended to coincide with an upcoming fundraising event of the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum.
The banner design represents the suffragist flag with vertical stripes of purple and gold and 36 stars, the number of states that ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. It also contains a rendering of the restored Birthplace Museum as it may have looked at the time that Susan B. Anthony was born there. The birthplace of Susan B. Anthony is a historic treasure, not only because she was born in Adams but also because it was the birthplace of the women’s rights movement. Anthony may have lived in Battenkill and Rochester, New York, but she was born in the modest house at 67 East Road, Adams where the Museum is to be located. “The Town of Adams is proud to be the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony,” said Joe Solomon, Chairman of the Adams Select Board. “We are pleased to celebrate this important cultural resource and support the efforts to restore her birthplace into a new museum for the public.”
On Sunday, October 12 the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum will hold their first fundraiser, a Silent and Live Auction, from 3-6:00 p.m. at Bounti-Fare Restaurant, 200 Howland Avenue in Adams. Adams Town Clerk Paul Hutchinson will serve as emcee and auctioneer and Tom Corrigan and Friends will provide entertainment. Admission is $5 and includes an auction booklet, hors’dourves, desserts, coffee, and cash bar. Sponsors of the event are Coakley, Pierpan, Dolan and Collins Insurance Agency, Greylock Federal Credit Union and Adams Cooperative Bank.
Since October 2007, the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum has spent $122,000 to install new plumbing, electrical service, heating, and air conditioning, renovating the upstairs for offices with a kitchen and bathroom, renovating windows and securing the foundation. In order to continue with Phase 2 of the renovation, the Board of Directors needs to raise additional funds. |
